With a rich cultural heritage dating back to the 1800s, and as a modern influence on hip-hop, break-dancing and free running, there’s nothing quite like it.
It’s often described as “a fight disguised as a dance” because practitioners, or Capoeiristas, demonstrate their speed, skill and agility in such a way to avoid physical contact – but that doesn’t mean physical contact doesn’t happen!
In class, students learn not only the physical elements of capoeira, but also to sing, play musical instruments, and possibly speak a whole new language via the exposure to Portuguese which forms the base language of capoeira.
So, is capoeira for you? Yes! The beauty of this art form is that it caters to people of all ages and fitness levels. Whether you’ve got a musical ear, or you’re keen to walk on your hands and do a backflip, there’s something for every budding capoeirista.
